Superintendent Salary Survey: They Work Hard for the Money
A comprehensive look at superintendent earnings, this article points out that while many former superintendents are being rewarded for performing the same role in the private sector, current superintendents face criticism that they are overpaid. "If we're looking at $300,000 as the high end (of superintendent salaries), that same person in the private sector leading a company of that magnitude would be making well over $1 million ? that's just a fact," AASA Executive Director Dan Domenech says in the article.

Jobs Act Focuses on School Renovation, Preventing Teacher Layoffs
AASA Executive Director Dan Domenech released the following statement in response to President Obama's proposed American Jobs Act: "The American Jobs Act would devote $25 billion to the renovation of 35,000 schools and $30 billion to prevent the layoff of 280,000 teachers. Keeping teachers in our classrooms is essential to meeting the educational needs of our students. Creating jobs that will make much-needed repairs to our schools is a win-win situation. We urge Congress to move towards the immediate passage of the American Jobs Act." Full statement. Fact Sheet: Repairing and Modernizing America's Schools.

  • Schools Continue To Confront Economic Realities
"Reductions continue to put a strain on schools coping with reductions in personnel, activities and services. The fear is that given the current state of the economy many school districts will continue to experience shortfalls from state contributions." Charles Maranzano, superintendent, Hopatcong Borough, N.J.
  • Schools Confront Poverty, Why Don't Education Policies?
"Urging schools to solve vision, nutrition or physical and emotional safety problems by working with 'non-profits' and 'faith-based institutions' is silly. Voluntary organizations can perform isolated acts of charity, but only government can narrow the vast social inequalities that bring many children to school unprepared to learn." Richard Rothstein, Economic Policy Institute.

    What Your Community Wants
A recent study by the National School Public Relations Association looks at the expressed needs of parents and the community when it comes to communication from the school. Information most wanted from parents is rationale for decisions made by the district and educational program options, unlike community members who were much more interested in budget information.

    The Importance of Courageous Leadership
In the September issue of The School Administrator, AASA President Patricia Neudecker uses a fable to illustrate the importance of courageous leadership. In Tech Leadership, Chuck Jaksec discusses how text messaging complicates crisis management and offers suggestions for how to cope. Don McAdams offers ways to ease the unpleasant task of budget cutting in Board-Savvy Superintendent, and the profile features Superintendent Tim Jenney of Fort Bend, Texas, whose leadership increased the number of exemplary schools in his district from one to 25.
